CREPUSCULA
Lighting Design Studio of the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno in cooperation with the Castle Hill in Litomyšl
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Litomyšl literally shone in a new light. On Friday 17 and Saturday 18 July, visitors had the opportunity to see the Crepuscula light installation, which opened at sunset. During the two hours that followed, the character of the installation changed naturally as the daylight waned, so the experience could be different each time. The light changes could be observed from the pews of the church, but more fun was the opportunity to discover the light in the space. The name Crepuscula is actually a play on the Latin word Crepusculum, which symbolizes twilight.
The diminishing daylight and the play of light slowly created transformations in the interior lighting of the church. The light revealed places that are primarily destined to shine, even those that usually remain in shadow - the individual statues in the side aisles of the church.
The installation was created in the church during a several-day creative workshop of students of the Lighting Design Studio of the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno under the guidance of their teachers - Pavla Beranová and Vladimír Burian. The entire workshop took place at sunset, because only then could the students and teachers examine the light in the temple and work on the installation. The authors were able to use Cigler's installation, which is currently installed in the church, in their light play. It could therefore have become the dominant element of the space at some points. The installation, not only with light but also with music that was created especially for the occasion, created a contemplative or even meditative atmosphere in the church for many visitors, some of whom even returned for this feeling.
Approximately 250 visitors attended the installation.
